Luck, purity and intuition; a friendly white cat means good ties or wishes fulfilled, one that runs off missed chances.

Psychology
Cats stand for independence, intuition, whimsy and the feminine. A white one stresses gentleness and purity — a voice telling you to trust your instincts, or a relationship you can relax into. One approaching you suggests you accept your own softer side.
Folklore and history
Many beckoning-cat figures are white, the colour said to invite luck. Yet old lore also says cats turn uncanny with age, so a white cat carries both purity and mystery. In dream reading it usually means luck or a good match.

This site's view
In this site's view, the white cat decides whether to choose you; cats approach only those they like. If it climbed onto your lap, being your natural self is drawing good ties. If it watched from the dark, there may be quiet goodwill or protection you have not noticed.
Going deeper: our reading
Some white cats with blue eyes are known to be born hard of hearing. Such cats may not turn when called, yet they live in contact with their surroundings through floor vibrations, people's presence and eye movements. In this site's reading, notice whether the white cat responded when you called. Turning at its name suggests you feel your feelings are reaching the other person. Not turning yet quietly approaching shows a relationship growing in which you understand each other through manner and mood rather than words. Moving further away the more you called may mean your strong wish to be understood is creating distance. This is our speculation, but for people who struggle to put feelings into words, the white cat may appear to show that some things come across without speaking. If you and the cat simply met each other's gaze, that was communication enough.
What to do on waking

Turning a bad dream
In Japan, people once tried to turn a worrying dream for the better: a baku charm under the pillow, telling the dream to a nandina bush, or reciting an old dream-turning poem. Read the column on dream trading and dream-turning
