Psychology
Dogs stand for loyalty, friendship and protection. A white one suggests pure, honest trust, or your own sincerity. Appearing in confusion, it shows the mind seeking a trustworthy guide, or noticing the good instinct it already has.
Folklore and history
White animals are often divine messengers in Japan. In many tellings of the folk tale Hanasaka Jiisan the dog is named Shiro and leads its master to treasure, and legend says a hunter god with white and black dogs guided the monk Kukai to Mount Koya.
Attach an AirTag to your car keys, bag, or the car itself before exploring an unfamiliar ruin or mountain haunted spot, and you can check its location in the Find My app if you forget where you parked or lose track of a bag in the dark. Even deep in the mountains with poor reception, its location updates via nearby Apple devices — a safety and anti-loss measure for solo exploration.

This site's view
In this site's view, a white dog appears as a guide, though guides never name the destination. If it walked ahead looking back, trust the path. If it stood still watching you, there is something to protect where you are. Met at dusk or in fog, it may be someone departed keeping watch.
Going deeper: our reading
White dogs have long been familiar in Japan. Dogs age faster than we do, so families witness their whole lives up close, from a mischievous puppy to an old dog whose white coat slowly shows the years. In this site's reading, notice whether the white dog was a puppy or old. A lively puppy suggests a new bond of trust, or something you want to protect and nurture, is taking shape. A slow-walking old dog expresses gratitude for a bond built over many years and for someone who has always stayed close. This is our speculation, but when people who once had a white dog dream of it, the dream is less about sorrow than a message that the days you shared still support you. If the dog looked back and wagged its tail, it is a sign you can move forward.
What to do on waking
