Psychology
The swaying willow reads as surviving by yielding. Its drooping shadow may also hold vague unease or old grief.
Folklore and history
"Willow in the wind" means yielding gracefully. Since the Edo period, ghosts beneath willows have been a staple of tales and prints. Another proverb warns there is not always a loach under the willow: do not count on repeated luck.

This site's view
In this site's view, day or night changes everything. A willow by a sunny river: yield rather than clash. A figure under a night willow: you sense someone's unspoken feelings. If it felt nostalgic rather than frightening, it is remembrance of someone gone.
Going deeper: our reading
Willows love water and have long been planted along rivers and moats, where their spreading roots also hold embankments in place. The Japanese proverb that a willow never breaks under snow, because its supple branches shed the weight, is used to say softness is stronger than rigidity. Willow branches were once woven into wicker trunks that carried belongings for journeys and house moves. In this site's reading, the dream shows how flexibility can protect people and places. Standing under a riverside willow and watching its branches sway suggests a heart that lets the current pass without resisting. Snow-laden branches bending without breaking mean it is time to credit yourself for carrying a heavy load. This is our speculation, but weaving with willow branches shows a gift for drawing people and things together through gentle ties. Sensing something eerie in a willow at night may mean your sensitivity has sharpened.
What to do on waking
