The main episode of Episode 17, “What Fades, What Doesn’t.” An investigation at the abandoned wedding hall Heian-kaku in Kasama, Ibaraki.

Rumors told here include a ghost living on the second floor of the banquet hall and sightings of a figure on the wedding aisle. The large gap between a place meant for joyful marriage and a ruin after a fire is thought to be part of what makes the rumors memorable. One researcher notes that there was no graffiti at all in the wedding-related spaces.

In this part, a series of strange sounds occurs inside, and the members are shaken. It is entertainment with staged elements and we do not guarantee its accuracy, but we present it as an audio record actually captured on site.

What to Watch For

One researcher points out that there was “no graffiti at all” in the wedding-related spaces. Many ruins show graffiti left by visitors, but this place is spoken of differently. Watch the scene of continuous strange sounds that startles the members with that background in mind.

Our Take

In our view, there is another way to read the remark that there is little graffiti in a wedding space. It may be because visitors keep respect for a place of celebration, but it may also be that a space burned by fire was hard to linger in. Burned floors and collapsed ceilings make people hesitate to step in. This is speculation, but a ruin’s “cleanness” is often produced by physical danger rather than by spiritual reasons. And the rumor of a figure on the wedding aisle seems to be the remaining presence of the people who were blessed here. It takes the form of a scary story, but at its center may be an afterimage of happiness.
