The jackal god who guides the dead: a guide appears at a turning point.
Category: World mythology (how to read this category)
Psychology
A god who guides the dead may reflect standing at a turning point between endings and beginnings; in dream psychology death usually means change, not literal death. A guide appearing may express a wish for direction amid doubt.
Folklore and history
Anubis, jackal-headed, was god of embalming and protector of tombs. He is shown at the weighing of the dead person's heart against Maat's feather of truth, guiding the righteous onward. Jackals roaming cemeteries may have inspired his role as guardian of the dead.

This site's view
In this site's view, Anubis is not a frightening dream but a question of honesty: the scales weighed the heart, not wealth. Balanced scales mean your sincerity is recognised; a heavy heart means set down one regret — the jackal may have come to help.
Going deeper: our reading
Anubis is painted black not because black meant death, it is often explained, but because it recalled the fertile dark silt of the Nile and the darkened bodies of the mummified, and so stood for rebirth. He was a gatekeeper more than a god of endings. In this site's reading, people who dream of Anubis are often involved in a farewell, or in seeing someone off to a new place. Being led by the hand by the jackal-headed god says you need not cross life's threshold alone. A black dog sitting quietly before a gate means you stand at the entrance to a new stage. If he resembled a dog you once had, you may wish to feel that a lost companion still watches over you. This is our speculation, but even in grief there may be a power, like rich soil, to grow new shoots.

Exploring a ruin or mountain haunted spot often means bringing home mud- or water-stained boots, rain gear, or used wet wipes. A foldable, highly waterproof EVA bucket lets you bundle all the dirty items together, then rinse it out and fold it flat afterward.
