The god who gave fire to humans: the price of helping others, or the courage to share knowledge.
Category: World mythology (how to read this category)
Psychology
Prometheus may reflect pride in acting for others alongside weariness at the cost — the wish to help even at self-sacrifice, or frustration at unrewarded devotion.
Folklore and history
Prometheus stole fire from the gods, hid it in a fennel stalk and gave it to humans. As punishment he was chained to a mountain rock, an eagle devouring his liver each day as it regrew. Ages later Heracles shot the eagle and freed him.

This site's view
In this site's view, Prometheus asks whether you give too much. His name is said to mean "forethought", yet he still chose punishment for others. Handing over fire means share your knowledge; being chained means you are wearing yourself down and may ask for rescue.
Going deeper: our reading
Mary Shelley subtitled Frankenstein The Modern Prometheus, and the fire-giving god's name came to stand for a hard question: can humans bear responsibility for the new powers they take? Even the Olympic flame, lit from sunlight at Olympia, seems to echo the memory of fire received from the heavens. In this site's reading, people who dream of Prometheus often feel secret guilt for bending the rules for someone, or crossing a line. Carrying hidden fire suggests a plan or kindness you cannot yet reveal. Watching your fire spread among people means your act is lighting more lives than you thought. A flame dying in your hands may show that your strength to keep your passion alive is running low. This is our speculation, but the dream may say you need not pay the price of goodwill alone.
