Psychology
Apartment dreams can reflect awareness of living wall-to-wall with many people: near yet distant. Being unable to find your unit among identical doors suggests your role in a group feels blurred. Moving to a higher floor may show a change in standing.
Folklore and history
Danchi housing estates were built across Japan during the high-growth era as a symbol of a modern dream life. Their rows of identical blocks later became the setting of many urban legends. Bright, clean buildings mean good relations; dim, run-down ones mean weariness with those around you.

This site's view
In this site's view, an apartment dream senses as many lives as there are windows. Gazing at lit windows at night shows loneliness and a wish to connect; fearing noises from next door or upstairs shows you are too wary of others to guard your own space. Was your own window lit?
Going deeper: our reading
Apartment blocks line up identical doors and windows. For those who grew up in one, footsteps echoing on the stairs and a neighbour's dinner smell at dusk are tied to childhood. Many older estates have been rebuilt or torn down, so some memories now point to places that no longer exist. In this site's reading, the dream partly retraces such lost scenes. How you moved matters. Taking the lift straight up hints at impatience to rise by a shortcut; climbing the stairs, a wish to advance on your own feet; stepping onto a balcony, a need to stand apart and see the whole. This is our speculation, but returning to your childhood block may mean you are tired of present ties and seeking a time when you carried nothing.
What to do on waking
Make one corner at home that is only yours, even a single chair or shelf. A brief greeting to a neighbour also eases the dream's unease.
