Psychology
The beckoning cat embodies a wish to draw people and money. It reflects openness to new encounters or a desire to be magnetic; whether it faced you shows your hopes in relationships.
Folklore and history
A raised right paw invites money, the left invites people; some raise both. Its origin is claimed by several temples and shrines, and it spread around the Edo period. Colours carry meanings too, and it has long guarded shop fronts.

This site's view
In this site's view, watch the paw. Slow beckoning means good ties will come; frantic waving asks if you are straining to attract people; a broken cat suggests cherishing those already near.
Going deeper: our reading
The beckoning cat's gesture is sometimes said to come from a cat washing its face with its paw. There are old sayings that a cat washing its face brings customers or rain. A shop's beckoning cat silently welcomes passers-by day after day. In this site's reading, those who dream of one often want someone to come or to find them, whether through a shop, a job or posts online. The scene changes the reading. A figurine moving like a real cat suggests a wish that was only a gesture beginning to move in reality; a faded old one, attachment to long work mixed with fatigue; one given by someone, a sign that person sincerely wants you to succeed. This is our speculation, but the dream may come to those growing tired of waiting, to say that beckoning still has meaning.
What to do on waking
