Psychology
Cherry blossoms bloom only briefly, so they carry a sense of "now or never". A cherry blossom dream may reflect both excitement before a turning point and anxiety about passing time. Laughing with someone under full bloom shows a wish to keep that bond. Alone under night blossoms suggests loneliness outside the festivities, or a quiet resolve.
Folklore and history
In ancient Japan, the Hanashizume festival was held to calm plague spirits thought to scatter with falling blossoms; it appears in the old legal codes. The poet Saigyo wished to die under cherry blossoms in spring and is said to have died around that very time. Sakura are flowers of both celebration and mourning.

This site's view
In this site's view, it matters whether you were seeing off or being seen off. Standing in a shower of petals, you are sending someone or something away. Watching from afar, you may be the one departing. We imagine something sleeping beneath cherry trees because we all sense that beauty always hides a farewell.
Going deeper: our reading
Many cherry trees in Japan today are Somei-yoshino, a variety propagated by grafting. So trees in one area bloom and fall together. After the petals drop comes the season of hazakura, trees in fresh leaf, and petals floating together on water are called hanaikada, flower rafts. In this site's reading, even the stages around full bloom matter. Swelling buds suggest preparing to move into a new stage alongside others; trees in leaf hint that you are accepting the steady days that continue after a glamorous time. Watching flower rafts may show the calm to send off what has ended in a beautiful way. If every tree bloomed except yours, the dream may reflect anxiety from comparing yourself with others. This is our speculation, but perhaps the dream is saying each tree may bloom in its own time.
