Psychology
Floods mirror emotions, usually held back like a levee, about to overflow. Water entering your home suggests stress invading private life. Being swept away or watching from high ground shows how much reserve you have.
Folklore and history
Floods appear in myths worldwide, like Noah's ark, as the world washed clean and remade. In Japan river flooding was a great threat, and some read the Yamata no Orochi myth as a symbol of wild rivers. Flood control was always a ruler's major task.

This site's view
In this site's view, a flood asks where you built your levees. The more you hold back, the higher the water, until it bursts. Muddy water means anger or grief mixed in; seeing it recede means your strength to clean up is returning.
Going deeper: our reading
When water starts entering a home, people first try to carry precious things to higher ground. After it recedes comes the long work of shovelling mud, drying what got wet and choosing what to keep and what to let go. In this site's reading, what you grabbed in a flood dream reflects what you most want to protect now. Photos or letters mean memories; taking someone's hand, the relationship itself. Water slowly soaking the floor suggests fatigue building without your noticing; a sudden surge may mean your heart has not caught up with an abrupt event. For people who have lived through a real flood, such dreams are often said to be natural. If they continue, please seek medical or professional support. This is our speculation, but clearing mud in a dream may be a sign that recovery has begun.
What to do on waking
Let a little emotion out today: a moving film or an honest journal entry. Small releases prevent a burst.
