Psychology
A clock dream can reflect heightened awareness of deadlines, age or life stages. Hands moving too fast or too slow, or an unreadable face, suggest feeling pressed or left behind. Being unable to read clocks is also common in dreams.
Folklore and history
The Nihon Shoki records a water clock in Emperor Tenji's reign, which is why June 10 is Time Day in Japan. Edo-period hours changed length with the seasons, and temple bells rang the time. Stories of clocks stopping when their owner died are told in many places.

This site's view
In this site's view, ask whose time it is: your wristwatch is your pace, a family wall clock the years together, a station clock society's speed. A stopped clock that frightened you means fear of change; one that calmed you, a wish to rest.
Going deeper: our reading
In clock dreams, sound can be the key, as with an alarm clock. In this site's reading, oversleeping because the alarm never rang reflects worry that, however careful you are, you will miss an important signal. An alarm that keeps ringing no matter how often you switch it off suggests a heart torn between wanting rest and being hurried by responsibility. The tick of a second hand echoing loudly in a silent room may mirror a tension that feels urgency even in idle moments. Some people are given a clock as a gift. This is our speculation, but that may be a wish to treasure time spent with that person, or to have your own time recognised. A scrambled digital display suggests confusion that your plans are moving beyond your control. After this dream, give yourself a little time free from the clock.

Turning a bad dream
In Japan, people once tried to turn a worrying dream for the better: a baku charm under the pillow, telling the dream to a nandina bush, or reciting an old dream-turning poem. Read the column on dream trading and dream-turning
