Psychology
A craftsman dream reflects patient skill-building and a wish to make something solid with your hands. Psychology calls deep, time-forgetting absorption flow, a source of fulfilment. Being absorbed in work in the dream may mean you crave something to focus on.
Folklore and history
Japanese lore says long-used tools can gain a spirit (tsukumogami), and rites like the memorial for broken needles thank tools for their service. Craft culture of making and mending is rooted in this. Watching a craftsman work is read as effort about to bear fruit.

This site's view
In this site's view, ask whether you were mending or making. Mending means you are repairing a hurt relationship or confidence by hand. Making means your efforts are taking shape. A workshop too dark to see your hands suggests the loneliness of unrecognised effort.
Going deeper: our reading
In the world of craftspeople, caring for tools has been valued as much as honing skill: sharpening blades, adjusting a plane's iron, wiping and putting everything away after work. Good work is believed to come from well-kept tools. In this site's reading, sharpening or polishing tools in the dream suggests a period of tuning up body and mind before something important. Rusty or chipped tools may signal that your heart is noticing abilities left unused, or health you have neglected. Silently watching a master's hands points to a wish to inherit something that cannot be taught in words. Teaching an apprentice yourself means the time to pass on your experience is approaching. This is our speculation, but frantically failing to make the same shape twice may reflect perfectionism that stops you from appreciating the character of your own work.
What to do on waking
Fix one small thing, a loose thread or screw. Setting something right with your hands also steadies the mind.
