A wish to express yourself, or talent drawing attention.

Psychology
Singing or painting lets out feelings words cannot hold. This dream can reflect a wish to express what you suppress, or to be recognised. In a Jungian light, an unused talent may be calling to you. Whether you performed boldly or lost your voice shows your state of mind.
Folklore and history
In Japan song and dance were offerings to the gods, as in kagura, still performed today. Words were thought to carry kotodama, a spirit of their own. Becoming a singer in a dream means rising attention; being unable to sing signals anxiety about self-expression.

This site's view
In this site's view, the key is the audience's faces. Warm applause means you are starting to trust your voice. A dark, unseen audience means you need to reclaim expression itself before any praise. Singing where no one listens is proof of a pure urge to create.
Going deeper: our reading
Singing solo on a big stage feels entirely different from singing in a school choir or doing karaoke with friends. Alone, the wish to stand out comes forward; together, the wish to harmonise with others does. In this site's reading, a singer or artist dream divides along that line: do you want to express yourself alone, or resonate with someone? Singing solo suggests a time when you want your individuality recognised. If your voice alone could not be heard in a choir, you may be shrinking yourself to blend in. Standing as a painter before an unfinished canvas points to uncertainty about how to complete feelings not yet given form. This is our speculation, but colours that never came out right may reflect frustration at the gap between what you feel and what you can put into words. Waiting backstage shows readiness to express yourself while waiting for a cue.
What to do on waking
Hum a favourite song or doodle in a margin. Skill does not matter; the point is to give your urge to express a small way out.
