Psychology
An elephant dream reflects a longing for a strong support or a steady foundation. Huge, calm creatures in dreams tend to carry both protection and crushing weight; whether you felt safe or overwhelmed is the key.
Folklore and history
Buddhist tradition says Queen Maya dreamed of a white elephant entering her body before the Buddha's birth. Fugen rides a white elephant, and the elephant-headed Kangiten is revered; in Japan the sacred elephant was known long before the real animal.

This site's view
In this site's view, the elephant carries the weight of memories you cannot forget. If it walked calmly away, you may set an old memory down; if it rampaged, a buried past is looking for a way out.
Going deeper: our reading
Elephant herds are usually said to be led by an older female, and it is thought to be her long experience that remembers where water lies in the dry season. In Japan, records tell that in the mid-Edo period, under the eighth shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune, an elephant brought across the sea walked all the way from Nagasaki to Edo, astonishing people along the road. Imagine seeing in person a giant known only from pictures. In this site's reading, elephant dreams can reflect meeting something larger than your imagination. Touching only part of it, such as the trunk or a leg, suggests frustration at seeing only a piece of what is happening. Stepping back to see the whole means you are ready to take in the problem's size. This is our speculation, but being led by an old elephant may mean it is time to listen to an elder's experience.
What to do on waking
Think of one person or habit that supports you and thank it, ideally with a short message to that person.
