Psychology
Wolves reflect loneliness and vigilance, as well as longing for strong bonds. A lone wolf suggests isolation; a pack, a wish to belong. Whether it seemed friend or foe mirrors your trust in others.
Folklore and history
In Japan the wolf's name echoes great god, and wolves were revered as divine protectors of crops from wild animals. Some mountain shrines still grant wolf talismans. The Japanese wolf vanished from reliable records around the end of the Meiji era and is considered extinct.

This site's view
In this site's view, did you hear it howl? A howl means someone far away calls you, or you long for someone. A watching wolf may be a stern person who actually protects you. Like Japan's vanished wolves, it can hold longing for lost ties.
Going deeper: our reading
Many parts of Japan have the legend of the 'sending wolf': a wolf that silently follows a traveller on a night mountain road. In some tellings it attacks if you stumble but leaves quietly once you reach home safely; in others it protects travellers from evil spirits. Today the phrase also describes someone who approaches under a show of kindness. In this site's reading, wolf dreams can reflect not knowing whether you are being watched or watched over. Sensing a wolf behind you on a dark road suggests you cannot tell if someone's involvement is kindness or interference. If it left once you were home, you are keeping a safe distance. A wolf wearing a familiar face, as in Little Red Riding Hood, shows the mind noticing a small wrongness in a close relationship. This is our speculation, but if relief outlasts fear, that watching may be trustworthy.

Turning a bad dream
In Japan, people once tried to turn a worrying dream for the better: a baku charm under the pillow, telling the dream to a nandina bush, or reciting an old dream-turning poem. Read the column on dream trading and dream-turning
