Psychology
Picking something up reflects noticing a possibility or talent you had overlooked. Reaching for something on the road shows a readiness to seize small chances; whether the object was useful hints at the quality of the chance.
Folklore and history
Japanese lore reads finding money as a hint of spending. A dropped comb was avoided because its name echoes "suffering" and "death". Found objects were thought to carry their previous owner's feelings.

This site's view
In this site's view, did it feel like someone else's lost item? Then you may be taking on another's expectations. If it felt meant for you all along, something long sought has finally arrived.
Going deeper: our reading
In dreams of finding things, what you did next reveals your feelings. In Japan the custom of handing found items to a police box is deeply rooted, and lost wallets often make their way back to their owners. In this site's reading, taking the item to be returned shows that you value trust and honesty more than a stroke of luck. Secretly taking it home may reflect quiet guilt about a position or praise that came to you unexpectedly; glancing around to see if anyone noticed suggests that guilt is strong. If the object was very old, you may be rediscovering interests or talents you had forgotten. This is our speculation, but people who have this dream are often attentive to small changes in daily life, and the find may be a small reward for that careful eye.

In Japan, people once tried to turn a worrying dream for the better: a baku charm under the pillow, telling the dream to a nandina bush, or reciting an old dream-turning poem. Read the column on dream trading and dream-turning
