Psychology
Shopping dreams speak less of objects than of what you lack — love, recognition, security. What you bought and whether you could pay show how likely that need is to be met; finding nothing suggests a wish not yet put into words.
Folklore and history
Markets in old Japan often stood at sacred sites or boundaries, and many places honoured a market deity. Buying and selling happened under divine watch. A satisfying purchase in a dream can signal a wish coming true.
A folding water tank for carrying drinking or hand-washing water to a haunted spot with no running water, whether in a ruin or the mountains. It folds flat when not in use, so you can keep it in the trunk or a disaster-prep bag, and it also helps during a long stakeout shoot.

This site's view
In this site's view, ask who you were shopping for. Buying only for yourself may be a backlash from always putting yourself last; choosing gifts hints at wanting to add to, or make amends in, a relationship.
Going deeper: our reading
In shopping dreams, feelings show in details such as a long checkout queue, a fitting room or a price tag. In this site's reading, a queue that never moves reflects the frustration of knowing what you want while your turn to get it never comes. A price tag you cannot read suggests you have not yet estimated what your wish will cost you. Changing clothes over and over in a fitting room may mean you want to try out a new self but lack the courage to step out. Opening your purse at the till to find too little money may reveal that your strength or preparation has not yet caught up with what you want. This is our speculation, but the urge to buy something on impulse after such a dream may come from a habit of quickly filling unmet needs, briefly awakened by the dream.
What to do on waking
Recall what you bought and name in one word the need it filled; you may find a way to meet it without spending.
