Psychology

Running away is among the most common typical dreams. It reads as the mind stepping back from a problem too heavy to face. The vaguer the pursuer, the less clearly you have named the source of your worry.

Folklore and history

In Japanese myth, Izanagi flees the underworld, throwing hair ornaments and peaches at his pursuers to escape. Peaches came to be seen as warding off evil. Fleeing was an old wisdom of survival.

This site's view

In this site's view, notice what you threw away as you ran. Dropping your bags hints at a wish to set down a burden; running with everything means something you cannot let go is slowing you. Just as Izanagi fled after seeing what he should not have seen, remember what you saw that made you run.

Going deeper: our reading

In escape dreams, where you ran to matters as much as what you fled. In this site's reading, fleeing to your parents' house or childhood room suggests a longing to be accepted without conditions. Fleeing to an unfamiliar town reflects a wish to start again somewhere new. If you never found a refuge and kept running, your life may lack a place where you can truly rest. Running hand in hand with someone shows the reassurance of sharing your troubles. There are also dreams of breaking the rules and slipping out of a building. This is our speculation, but that may be less an escape from fear than a wish to be free, for a while, from roles and promises that bind you. Do not dismiss running away as weakness; notice where you wanted to go.
