Psychology
Beating its wings so fast it hovers, the hummingbird mirrors a mind always on the move. Light and joyful means things are flowing; restless means too much energy spent on small things.
Folklore and history
Hummingbirds live only in the Americas; the Aztecs linked them to their god of war and the sun. A South American tale of a hummingbird carrying drops of water to a forest fire is told in Japan too as a parable of doing what you can.
The first entry in the "Scary Floor Plans" series — a firsthand report by Tanishi Matsubara, the comedian famous for living in stigmatized properties, and a reference for our stigmatized-property articles.

This site's view
In this site's view, it says small is not weak: someone keeps carrying drops. Your effort matters even if unseen. A bird moving flower to flower says you may widen your joys rather than cling to one.
Going deeper: our reading
Hummingbirds burn huge amounts of energy beating their wings so fast. On cold nights they are known to sharply lower their body temperature and heart rate, entering a deep, almost motionless rest that saves strength until morning: a quiet night in contrast to their busy days. In this site's reading, a hummingbird dream reflects not only a mind that never stops but the truth that to keep moving, you need times of deep stillness. A hummingbird perched completely still suggests your body and mind want rest so thorough it feels like switching off. One still darting between flowers after dark may show you carrying effort into hours meant for rest. Watching one sleep in your palm may mean you are ready to care for a small, tired part of yourself. This is our speculation, but the dream offers the courage to rest to those who keep up small efforts.
What to do on waking
