The world serpent Jormungandr: a problem too large to hold, or the cycle of endings and beginnings.
Category: World mythology (how to read this category)
Psychology
A serpent circling the whole world can stand for a problem too big to see or know where to begin. Biting its own tail mirrors worries that keep returning. Jungian readers also treat the circling serpent as wholeness and renewal.
Folklore and history
In Norse myth Jormungandr, a child of Loki, was cast into the sea by the gods and grew until it encircled the human world, biting its own tail. Thor's arch-enemy, it is said the two will slay each other at Ragnarok.

This site's view
In this site's view, Jormungandr is the foe whose defeat brings you down too; Thor falls to its venom after killing it. Fighting it means seek a way to avoid mutual ruin rather than victory. A serpent sleeping in the deep says some problems need not be touched yet.
Going deeper: our reading
Norse myth tells of Thor rowing out with a giant and baiting a hook with an ox's head to haul up Jormungandr; the serpent surfaced, but the fight went unresolved. In this site's reading, whether the serpent lurked in the depths or surfaced changes the dream. Only a long shadow in the dark water suggests your heart senses a large problem not yet out in the open. A head rising from the waves means the time has come to face a task you have long avoided. If you were dropping a line yourself, you are deliberately trying to bring to light something that may be beyond you. This is our speculation, but a line snapping before you could land it shows a brake telling you there is no need to force a resolution now. Big problems may be faced slowly.
What to do on waking
Break your largest worry into the smallest step you can take today. Even a world serpent is just a line from the tip of its tail.
