Psychology
Odysseus is the archetype of wit over force. He may appear when you cannot go straight and must use your head on a long detour. His voyage is often read as the inner search for where you truly belong.
Folklore and history
The Homeric hero credited with the Trojan Horse spent ten years wandering home to Ithaca past monsters and enchantresses, while his wife Penelope held suitors off by unweaving her loom each night.

This site's view
In this site's view, Odysseus affirms the long way home. A detour is not failure but the time that earns your return. A storm-tossed ship means you are mid-trial; a distant island means the end is near; someone waiting reminds you of a promise to keep.
Going deeper: our reading
Odysseus's wife Penelope is said to have told her suitors she would choose once she finished weaving a cloth, then unravelled each night what she wove by day to buy time. Also well known is the scene in which only the old dog Argos recognises his master at once after twenty years away. In this site's reading, whether you were travelling or waiting changes the dream. Mid-voyage, you are heading toward a goal by way of many detours. Waiting like Penelope shows you are enduring an endless wait with ingenuity of your own. Returning home unrecognised may reveal a fear that you have changed too much for the place you go back to. This is our speculation, but if only a dog or animal recognised you, your heart is sure there are beings who know your true nature, not your title or appearance.
What to do on waking
Send a short note to someone waiting for you or someone from home. Confirming where you belong lightens the detour.
