◎ Lucky dream Traditionally a lucky sign
Persephone, queen of the underworld: parting and renewal, the turning seasons. A hard season will pass.
Category: World mythology (how to read this category)
Psychology
Persephone's tale is one of sudden change: a maiden carried off becomes a queen below. Jungian readers see an innocent self maturing through the underworld. She may appear when you sense yourself changing through unwanted change.
Folklore and history
In Greek myth, Persephone, daughter of harvest goddess Demeter, was taken by Hades and, having eaten pomegranate seeds below, must spend part of each year there. The earth lies barren while her mother grieves and blooms when she returns.
Getting lost and having to spend the night in the mountains or a ruin, or losing body heat in bad weather, are real possibilities during exploration. This emergency thermal sheet, an aluminum-coated film that blocks heat loss, fits in one hand and works as cheap insurance to keep in your exploration backpack.

This site's view
In this site's view, Persephone reminds us that what we have tasted cannot be undone; you cannot fully return to who you were. Yet she comes back every year. Flowers in her hands mean a season of recovery; a pomegranate means accepting the weight of your choice.
Going deeper: our reading
Persephone is said to have been carried off while picking flowers in a meadow. A girl playing in spring sunshine, pulled into another world in an instant, mirrors the feeling of childhood ending suddenly one day. In this site's reading, whether you stood with the daughter or with her mother Demeter changes the dream. On the daughter's side, you have left familiar ground for a new world and are making a place there despite confusion. On the mother's side, it is the loneliness of a child or loved one leaving your hands, and the struggle to accept it. It often comes when family members leave home. Picking flowers may mean you cherish a calm, unknowing time just before change. This is our speculation, but choosing to eat the pomegranate yourself shows you are beginning to see change as something you choose, not something taken from you.
What to do on waking
Enjoy a pomegranate or seasonal fruit and recall one way you changed this year. Setting losses beside gains shows the next season.
