Psychology
Lions reflect pride, confidence and leadership. Being or walking beside a lion means wanting to own your strength; an attacking lion suggests fear of authority or wounded pride.
Folklore and history
Japan's guardian lion-dogs at shrines and the shishimai lion dance are said to derive from lions, transformed as the image traveled from the continent. They ward off evil. A saying about lions dropping cubs into a ravine describes tough love.

This site's view
In this site's view, did the lion roar? A roar means it is time to speak up; a lion lying silent means untapped strength. A sad lion in a cage suggests you are holding back your power out of deference.
Going deeper: our reading
The lion is called the king of beasts, yet it is unusual among cats in living in groups, and within the pride much of the hunting is said to be done by females. Males with grand manes guard the group against rivals, but they are also known for resting much of the day. In this site's reading, lion dreams can show a gap between how impressive one looks and the role one actually plays. Identifying with a maned male may mean you are relied on but unsure you are truly useful. A lioness chasing prey suggests a wish for your behind-the-scenes work to be recognised. A lone lion separated from its pride points to wondering what remains of you without your title. This is our speculation, but the dream may be saying that strength means doing your part, not standing out.
