The shifting rainbow stone: broadening possibilities, or changeable moods.

Psychology
An opal can be read as a heart swaying among many possibilities. A stone that changes colour with the angle often stands for shifting moods, indecision or a many-sided self. Hesitation may simply mean your options are rich.
Folklore and history
Opal is October's birthstone, flashing rainbow colours as light shifts. In Europe a nineteenth-century novel is said to have spread a rumour that it was unlucky, though earlier it was praised as holding the virtues of many gems. Dream lore reads it as widening possibilities.

This site's view
In this site's view, ask which colour caught your eye. Red or orange: leaning toward passion. Blue or green: seeking peace. None in particular: perhaps it is not yet time to choose. Opal holds water and may crack if dried out; so does the heart.
Going deeper: our reading
Much of the world's precious opal comes from Australia, where it is thought to have formed as water seeped through dry ground over long ages. Tiny spheres packed in orderly rows split passing light, so the colours shift with every angle. In this site's reading, people who dream of opal are often puzzled that they come across differently with different people, and wonder which self is real. Turning the stone in the light suggests you are exploring your many sides. If it would not glow in a dark room, contact with others, your light, may have dwindled so your charm is harder to see. Finding opal in a dry desert means some moisture remains in your heart even in hard surroundings. This is our speculation, but your changing colours are your richness.
What to do on waking
Do not force a decision today; simply lay out your options. Drink plenty of water and keep body and mind from drying out.
