Looking at your many sides; caged animals are instincts held back.

Psychology
A zoo reflects looking at your many traits and instincts from a safe distance. Caged animals may stand for urges you usually hold back. Which animal drew you and which frightened you separates the traits you accept from those you hide.
Folklore and history
Edo-era shows of rare animals drew crowds, and elephants and camels from abroad caused a sensation. Animals have long served as divine messengers and metaphors for human nature. Dream lore reads a happy zoo visit as widening relationships and an escaped animal as bottled feelings spilling over.

This site's view
In this site's view, ask who was inside the cage. Watching animals from outside means you still handle your instincts safely; finding yourself caged and stared at suggests the strain of constant judgment. An empty cage means what you held back is already out.
Going deeper: our reading
Zoo animals often sleep or hide in the back by day, not appearing as we hoped, and nocturnal ones come alive only after dark; each creature keeps its own rhythm. In this site's reading, whether you got to see the animal you wanted shows what you are seeking within yourself. If the animal you came for was lively, it may be time to express your strengths and individuality freely. If it stayed hidden however long you searched, a side of you that wants to show itself may still be getting ready. This is our speculation, but touring the zoo with a child may express a wish to regain the sense of wonder you once had for everything. An open cage with animals roaming free suggests feelings you held back are finding a way out.
What to do on waking
Choose the animal that stood out and list three traits it has. One may be a strength you truly want to show now.
