Folklore and history
The Japanese name is said to come from its likeness to a samurai helmet, and it stars in summer bug-catching. Ancient Egypt linked the dung-rolling scarab to the god who moves the sun, a symbol of rebirth.

This site's view
In this site's view, beetles bring a reunion with your childhood self. One in a cage may be curiosity locked up by busyness; beetles fighting call for a head-on challenge; releasing one sets an old dream free.
Going deeper: our reading
Beetles are active at night and are known to gather at sap oozing from oaks and similar trees; some remember heading into the woods before dawn on summer vacation. Larvae spend autumn and winter in leaf mold, then pupate and emerge in early summer; that long time underground produces the splendid horn. In this site's reading, people who dream of beetles often miss times spent absorbed in something with others and wish to bring that heat back. Finding beetles at sap in the night woods suggests meeting what you sought somewhere unexpected; raising larvae in soil, patiently nurturing a plan not yet visible; peering into a bug cage with a parent or child, a wish to cherish family time. This is our speculation, but the dream may be your childhood self coming to cheer you on.
