Psychology
A box can be read as unopened possibilities, or secrets and memories stored deep inside. A closed box holds both hope and fear of the unknown; whether you wanted to open it shows how you face change.
Folklore and history
In the tale of Urashima Taro, opening the forbidden tamatebako turns him into an old man. Pandora, too, opened a forbidden vessel and loosed evils on the world, though hope remained. Dream lore reads opening a box as discovering a new talent or truth.
For scouting and reading maps before a haunted-spot visit, or checking direction in mountain areas or around a ruin where it's easy to get turned around.

This site's view
In this site's view, did someone try to stop you? Opening it anyway shows a strong will to know and change despite others. Closing it yourself suggests not knowing yet may be protecting you. The tamatebako teaches the importance of choosing when to open.
Going deeper: our reading
Boxes take many forms in daily life: gift boxes, boxes of keepsakes, moving cartons. The thrill before opening a birthday present and the nostalgia of finding an old box in a closet are both feelings boxes bring. In this site's reading, people who dream of boxes often stand between what they have stored away and what they are about to receive. A beautifully wrapped box suggests hope for someone's kindness or unknown good news; stacked cartons, an approaching change such as a move or new job; a small jewelry box, precious feelings kept hidden. An empty box raises fear of a disappointing result, yet also offers the freedom to decide what to fill it with. This is our speculation, but handing a box to someone may express a wish to pass on something you cherish, often seen when roles change.
What to do on waking
Open one box that has sat at the back of a drawer or closet. Rediscovering forgotten things can bring fresh insight.
