Psychology
A map can be read as your inner blueprint of what lies ahead. Reading it with ease reflects a plan that feels settled; blurred, unreadable lines suggest too much information and no clear judgement. How calm you felt while looking at it matters more than the route.
Folklore and history
In the Edo period Ino Tadataka surveyed Japan's coastline on foot to produce precise maps. Once travel guides and road maps circulated, ordinary people could picture distant places too. Dream lore reads a map as a time to check your direction.

This site's view
In this site's view, what matters on a dream map is the blank space. Unmarked areas and roads that stop short are territory no one has decided for you. If they felt frightening, you fear leaving the set path; if exciting, it is time to draw your own line.
Going deeper: our reading
Today a smartphone map shows where we are and talks us to our destination. It is convenient, but some say we now have fewer chances to learn routes ourselves. In this site's reading, people who dream of maps are often torn between following a path someone shows them and finding their own. Getting lost over a paper map suggests a wish to think things through and decide yourself, even if it takes effort; a frozen phone map that loses your location, anxiety at losing a guide you relied on; studying a map with someone, a wish to discuss the future together; unknown place names on an old map, interest in your past or family roots. This is our speculation, but marking the map yourself may show your destination coming into focus.
What to do on waking
Sketch today's plans as a simple map on paper. Seeing where you might get lost eases the dream's sense of being astray.
