Psychology
Jung called the face we show society the persona, a word originally meaning an actor's mask in ancient theatre. A mask dream can be read as the balance between that protective face and your bare one. Being unable to remove it may reflect the fatigue of constant performing.
Folklore and history
Japan has deep traditions of masks — Noh masks, kagura and festival demon masks — through which a person becomes another being. Masks were sometimes treated as vessels for gods and spirits, never to be handled carelessly. Hygiene masks, meanwhile, have recently become an everyday shield.
Exploring a ruin or mountain haunted spot often means bringing home mud- or water-stained boots, rain gear, or used wet wipes. A foldable, highly waterproof EVA bucket lets you bundle all the dirty items together, then rinse it out and fold it flat afterward.

This site's view
In this site's view, a mask dream asks who you are protecting yourself from. In a crowd, from others' eyes; in front of family, from feelings you cannot show even to those close. If you could not remember the face beneath, you may be tired enough to have forgotten it.
Going deeper: our reading
A mask has an odd quality: it hides only the lower half of the face. The eyes stay visible while the mouth disappears, so you can only half read someone's expression. During the years when infections spread widely, many people lived behind this half-visible face. In this site's reading, a mask dream can reflect loneliness at not being able to exchange the wordless signals that expressions carry. If only the other person wore a mask, you may be uneasy because you cannot read their true feelings. Panicking because your own mask had slipped off suggests worry that your real feelings will show the moment you relax. This is our speculation, but a dream in which you removed the mask and breathed deeply often comes when long-held tension is finally starting to ease.
What to do on waking
Somewhere private today, say your true feeling out loud in one word. A moment without the mask helps you breathe.
