Psychology
A sword can be read as the resolve to cut through doubt and the readiness to stand for what you protect. It often represents will, responsibility and self-discipline; a drawn blade may also show anger or tension barely held in.
Folklore and history
In Japanese myth, Susanoo found the Kusanagi sword in the tail of the serpent Yamata no Orochi, and it became one of the three imperial regalia. The sword was called the samurai's soul and offered to shrines as a treasure. Dream lore reads receiving a sword as being entrusted with responsibility.

This site's view
In this site's view, was it sheathed or drawn? Sheathed in hand: the calm of power held in reserve. Drawn: a time to cut a way forward, or tension stretched too far. Before swinging, ask what the blade is protecting.
Going deeper: our reading
Japanese swords are known to be made by smiths who heat, hammer and fold steel many times. The wave-like hamon on the blade forms during hardening. A blade rusts quickly if neglected, so its owner must oil it and handle it with care. In this site's reading, people who dream of swords are often gaining power or responsibility, or are unsure how to handle it. Finding a rusty sword suggests polishing talents or resolve long left unused; caring for a sword, a sincere grasp of the weight of power; entrusting it to someone, a wish to share responsibility you have carried alone; a sword breaking, the fatigue of pushing too hard. This is our speculation, but the dream may teach that strength lies less in swinging the blade than in keeping it cared for.

Turning a bad dream
In Japan, people once tried to turn a worrying dream for the better: a baku charm under the pillow, telling the dream to a nandina bush, or reciting an old dream-turning poem. Read the column on dream trading and dream-turning
