Psychology
A diary is written for yourself alone, so it stands for private truth. Eager writing is the mind sorting events; a blank diary, words not yet found. Being read mixes fear of exposure with a wish to be understood.
Folklore and history
Japan has kept diaries since the Heian period, when journals of feeling became literature whose joys and jealousies are still read a thousand years later. Writing one in a dream means settling feelings; losing one, releasing the past.

This site's view
In this site's view, check the date. An old page means unfinished feelings from then still call; writing on a future date is not prophecy but the shape of what you hope for, or fear.
Going deeper: our reading
In a diary dream, the shape of the diary matters. A lockable diary points to a clear secret you want to protect. A shared exchange diary passed between friends may reflect longing for a time when words connected you, or loneliness at not sharing your real thoughts now. A phone note or online journal suggests you are torn between the self you show and the self you keep hidden. In this site's reading, handwriting that is not yours is special: someone writing in your diary hints that others' expectations have crept too far into your life's script, while unreadable writing may be a feeling not yet named. Burning or throwing the diary away is, we suspect, less a rejection of the past than a sign you no longer need to reread it.
What to do on waking

Turning a bad dream
In Japan, people once tried to turn a worrying dream for the better: a baku charm under the pillow, telling the dream to a nandina bush, or reciting an old dream-turning poem. Read the column on dream trading and dream-turning
