Psychology

Dreaming of a god can express a longing for protection and guidance from something greater. In a Jungian sense, it may be the psyche's wholeness, a more mature self, appearing in divine form, often before big decisions.

Folklore and history

In Japan, people long practised sanro, secluding themselves at temples and shrines to receive revelations in dreams, which were seen as a meeting place of the divine and human. Dream lore calls a god dream supremely lucky and advises remembering any words spoken.

This site's view

In this site's view, notice the god's form and what was asked of you. Formless light means it is time to think for yourself; clear words may be what your deepest self has long wanted to say. Honour them, and hold them up to your own life.

Going deeper: our reading

The Japanese word kami has never meant only a single creator. It also covers the gods of mountains, rivers, the hearth and the rice field, beings living right beside everyday life; the phrase 'eight million gods' captures that breadth. So when people in Japan dream of a god, the figure varies widely: an old man in white, pure light, or simply the felt presence of a local shrine. In this site's reading, the form reveals where you sense something dependable. A god far up in the heavens points to a wish to surrender to a larger current; one in the house or kitchen, a wish to protect ordinary life. This is our speculation, but being unable to speak before a god may be most common among earnest, reserved people unused to voicing thanks.

What to do on waking

Write down the words or scenes before they fade, and consider visiting a nearby shrine or temple in gratitude.
