Psychology
Dogs in dreams often stand for loyalty and friendship, so an injured one can signal that the mind senses pain in an important bond. It may also show that the tireless, dutiful part of you has reached its limit.
Folklore and history
Tales across regions tell of dogs wounded while protecting their masters, so an injured dog calls to mind someone straining on your behalf. Dream readers take it as a prompt to watch over friends' or family members' health and worries.

This site's view
In this site's view, whether you helped is the fork. Tending the wound means you already hold the power to mend things; standing frozen suggests someone you have noticed but not reached out to. Dogs, it is often said, hide their pain.
Going deeper: our reading
Dogs are said to carry on as usual even when they are hurting, and owners sometimes notice only after a problem has advanced. In this site's reading, people who dream of an injured dog are often sensing something behind someone close to them saying they are fine. Or perhaps they themselves keep hiding their pain so as not to worry anyone. A dog limping yet still following you suggests someone who is pushing themselves to stay by your side. Carrying the dog in search of a vet suggests a mix of wanting to help and not knowing how. This is our speculation, but if the injured dog resembled a family member or your own pet, it may be a sign to sit down with that person and gently ask how they are.
What to do on waking
Ask someone you have been worried about how they are, and rest if you are worn out yourself.

Turning a bad dream
In Japan, people once tried to turn a worrying dream for the better: a baku charm under the pillow, telling the dream to a nandina bush, or reciting an old dream-turning poem. Read the column on dream trading and dream-turning
