Psychology
Keeping a dog mirrors both the joy and duty of care. It can show a wish to protect someone or to be accepted unconditionally, and may appear when caring roles, such as parenting or mentoring, are growing in waking life.
Folklore and history
In Japan, because dogs have easy, plentiful births, expectant mothers still wrap a maternity sash on a Day of the Dog in the fifth month. Dogs have long been household protectors, and keeping one in a dream is read as good luck in family and friendship.
Sleeping in the car near a haunted spot the night before or while on standby, road noise, insects, or other explorers' voices can keep you awake. These American-made earplugs, rated NRR33 for high noise reduction, block out most surrounding sound and improve the quality of a nap in the car.

This site's view
In this site's view, the dog you chose describes the companion you seek: a big, sturdy dog, a wish to be protected; a small one, a wish to protect. If you gave it a name, that relationship is already taking shape inside you.
Going deeper: our reading
Life with a dog brings a fixed rhythm of walks and meals. You go out on rainy days and cold mornings, and before long you are chatting with neighbours more often. In this site's reading, people who dream of keeping a dog often feel a need to bring back a steady anchor to scattered days: moving at set times for someone else. If you enjoyed caring for the dog, your heart is ready to take on responsibility. If you forgot to care for it and it was left waiting, there may be someone dear or a promise you keep putting off. This is our speculation, but taking in the dog you had as a child may show your heart trying to recover the atmosphere of that home and the feeling of being loved without conditions.
