Psychology
Cats, less obedient than dogs, are read in dreams as independence and keeping your own pace. Keeping one suggests a wish to bring that quality into your life; struggling to care for it hints at trouble balancing freedom and responsibility.
Folklore and history
In silk-raising regions of Japan, cats were prized for keeping rats from silkworms, and pictures of cats were even kept as charms. They guarded both livelihood and wealth. Dream readers sometimes see keeping a cat as a deepening bond with a new person, for better or worse.

This site's view
In this site's view, notice which spot the new cat claimed. A sunny window, you are finding a place to rest. The back of a closet or a gap behind furniture, you too keep a hidden refuge. Cats, it is said, bond with the house rather than the people.
Going deeper: our reading
Cats are known to spend much of the day asleep and to favour sunny spots, high places and snug corners. Even near people, they walk away clearly when they do not want to be touched. In this site's reading, people who dream of keeping a cat often want connection, but not around the clock; they seek relationships with a comfortable distance. If you and the cat spent time in the same room doing separate things, a relationship where you need not be on guard may already surround you. If the cat went out and never came back, you may respect another's freedom so much that you cannot admit you are lonely. This is our speculation, but a cat curling up asleep on your bed may show your heart quietly filled by someone you trust.
