Psychology
Walking linked by a leash can reflect who leads in a relationship and how well you manage your impulses. Being dragged suggests feeling swept along; walking calmly side by side, a time when mind and action move in step.
Folklore and history
Dogs have walked beside people for ages through hunting and guarding, and are sometimes told of as guides on the road. Dream readers see walking a dog as stable health and social luck, and a snapped leash as a caution about changing relationships.

This site's view
In this site's view, ask who knew the way. If you led, your life moves by your own will. If the dog confidently took an unfamiliar path, there is a destination you have not yet noticed. On an unknown road at dusk, remember where its feet stopped.
Going deeper: our reading
For a dog, a walk is said to be an important time to sniff and learn about its surroundings, and owners are sometimes advised to let it pause rather than hurry. In this site's reading, people who dream of walking a dog often sense that, rushing toward goals every day, they have lost time for detours and pauses. If the dog kept stopping and you waited, your heart may be starting to allow itself to go slowly. If you dragged the dog along impatiently, you may have little room to spare for yourself or others. This is our speculation, but if the dog ran up to a stranger and a conversation began, an unexpected meeting may lie close to your daily life. A small detour on your usual route might be worth trying.
