Psychology
The kitchen is where we nourish body and heart. In dreams it relates to your role at home and your wish to feed yourself or others; smooth cooking means fulfilment, a mess may mean caregiving fatigue.
Folklore and history
Japanese kitchens once enshrined a hearth god, often called Kojin. Fire made the kitchen the heart of the house; "dividing the hearth" meant founding a branch family. A bright, clean kitchen in a dream signals good home fortune.

This site's view
In this site's view, ask whom you were cooking for. Family means responsibility; yourself, independence; laying food on an empty table, a longing to share. A cold stove suggests you worry about the warmth of home.
Going deeper: our reading
A kitchen is full of unseen signs of life: steam, the sound of a knife, the smell of simmering food. Sensing morning from kitchen sounds or guessing dinner from the smell is a familiar scene in many homes. In this site's reading, the sounds and smells in the kitchen reveal the warmth of your daily life. Being surrounded by bubbling pots and delicious aromas suggests your heart seeks, or already has, a secure and fulfilling routine. A silent kitchen with no fire lit may mean you feel some warmth is missing at home or in close relationships. This is our speculation, but standing in your childhood family kitchen may show gratitude and nostalgia for whoever cooked there still supporting you today. Cooking side by side with someone expresses a wish to share roles and create something together.
