Psychology
A leak is trouble that seeps in slowly. In dreams it suggests energy or money draining unnoticed, or feelings seeping out despite you. Where and how much it leaked shows the scale.
Folklore and history
In the folktale Furuya no Mori, a thief or beast lurking nearby overhears an old couple say that nothing scares them more than the leak in their old house, takes "the leak" for a monster, and flees; the animals vary by region. Leaks were the everyday dread that crept into homes. In dream lore, they urge early repair.
A breakdown on the way to a mountain or backroad haunted spot, with no streetlights around, is genuinely dangerous. This LED stop-signal light is smaller and easier to carry than a traditional warning triangle, mounts to the car body with a base magnet, and is visible to following traffic from about 1,000m at night.

This site's view
In this site's view, ask whether you set a bucket. Catching the drips means you are coping; letting the floor soak means denial has reached its limit. Water that felt like tears is sorrow you show no one.
Going deeper: our reading
A leak is often heard before it is seen. Many have lain awake at night as a drip, drip began somewhere in a silent room. In apartments, water seeping down from upstairs can become a problem you cannot fix yourself. In this site's reading, where the leak came from and who repaired it change the dream. Your own roof leaking suggests your fatigue or emotional wear is nearing its limit. Water from an upstairs or neighbouring home may show other people's problems or feelings seeping into your life. Hearing only the sound without finding the spot reflects unease you cannot yet pin down. A repairer or family member fixing it means you are ready to ask for help. This is our speculation, but people who brush off small troubles as "still fine" may be urged by this dream to deal with them early.
