Psychology
Hometown dreams show a wish to return to your roots or find a safe harbour. When tired, the mind may recall the ease of a time before you had to be anyone. Warm nostalgia and a changed, unfamiliar hometown mean very different things.
Folklore and history
At Obon, ancestral spirits are believed to return home, and the living travel back too, so the hometown is where both the living and the dead come home. A warm hometown dream signals recovery; a ruined one, exhaustion.

This site's view
In this site's view, ask who was there. Late family living as usual means they still support you; an empty hometown, sorrow that there is nowhere to return; meeting your childhood self asks you to recall what you once loved.
Going deeper: our reading
Returning home after years away, you may find the station shops changed or old roads widened, and notice a gap between the town in memory and the one before you. Even places you thought unchanging have quietly aged while you were gone. In this site's reading, whether your hometown appeared as remembered or changed divides the meaning. Unchanged streets suggest your hometown is still kept in your heart as a steady anchor. Bewildering new buildings may mean your sense of origin is shaken and you are seeking somewhere to return to. This is our speculation, but taking part in a hometown festival or seasonal event may express a wish to feel you truly belonged among local people and the customs handed down. A journey from your hometown back to your current home suggests you are reconnecting past and present selves.
