Psychology
Milk reflects a need to be protected and nourished. As our first food, it recalls the bond with a mother and unconditional acceptance; in Jungian terms, the mother archetype appears as nourishment.
Folklore and history
Ancient Japanese nobles prized dairy such as so, made by boiling down milk. Buddhism compared the stages of refining milk to deepening teachings, calling the finest daigo, the root of the word daigomi, true relish. Milk symbolises nourishment and the highest gift.

This site's view
In this site's view, are you giving or receiving? Being given warm milk means someone you can lean on; giving it means you nourish others. Spilled milk may mirror sadness that your kindness went unreceived.
Going deeper: our reading
For many people, milk is tied to memories of school lunch. A bottle or carton came with every meal; some were told to finish it, others loved it. People remember a friend gulping down cold milk in one go, or a carton they disliked and could never empty. Warmed, milk releases a soft scent with the steam, and some recall being made hot milk on sleepless nights. In this site's reading, milk dreams can be the heart remembering the security of a time when the same thing was ready at the same hour. Facing a carton of school milk may express nostalgia for orderly days spent alongside friends. This is our speculation, but finding milk past its date suggests realising that a comfort you long relied on no longer quite fits. Making hot milk yourself shows a growing ability to settle yourself to sleep.
