Psychology
Rotten food reflects neglected problems or relationships spoiled by time. What we avoid looking at tends to return in dreams as foul smells or sights. Hesitating to throw it out shows you are not yet ready to let go.
Folklore and history
In Japanese myth, Izanagi went to the underworld for his wife Izanami, looked when told not to, saw her decaying body, and fled. Decay was the forbidden face of death. Yet the proverb "even rotten, it's still sea bream" says true worth survives damage.
Useful for staying in contact during a group investigation, or in a mountain area or ruin with no phone reception.

This site's view
In this site's view, it is a dream of having looked, like Izanagi facing the reality you ignored. Found at the back of a fridge, it is a forgotten promise or feeling; handed over by someone, something stale in that relationship. Recall whether any part was still good.
Going deeper: our reading
When something rots, the change usually happens quietly, out of sight: at the back of the fridge, in a box put away, in the corner of an unused room. Only when you open it do you realise how much time has passed, with that small jolt of wondering how long it has been like this. Yet some things, like fermented foods, gain depth by changing slowly. Rot and fermentation are both the work of microbes. In this site's reading, dreams of rotten things show the mind turning toward the neglected time itself. This is our speculation, but freezing as you try to throw something rotten away may reflect pain, as if discarding it would deny the self who lived through that time. If what you thought was rotten turned out to be fermenting into a pleasant aroma, a past you judged harshly may have become part of your depth.
What to do on waking
Clear out one spot, the fridge or a drawer, and throw away what has gone off. Tidying objects makes it easier to face postponed matters.
