Psychology

Vegetables reflect health and steady growth. Grown slowly in fields, they stand for quiet but sure effort. They may appear when the body craves nutrients, and their condition mirrors your state of mind and body.

Folklore and history

A Japanese saying holds that eating the season's first produce adds seventy-five days to your life, and nanakusa porridge of seven herbs is eaten on January 7 for a healthy year. Vegetables were thought to carry the season's power; fresh ones in dreams signal recovery.

This site's view

In this site's view, vegetables show time spent underground. Digging up roots means hidden effort is taking shape; wilted greens ask whether you neglect daily self-care. Growing versus buying them shows how actively you shape your life.

Going deeper: our reading

Misshapen vegetables taste just as good, yet shoppers tend to choose the prettiest. Crooked cucumbers and forked radishes turn up mainly in home gardens or farm stands, and their awkward shapes can make you smile. Vegetables also take effort before you can eat them: washing off soil, peeling, chopping. Busy people often skip that work. In this site's reading, people who dream of vegetables may be sensing a worth in themselves that appearance and efficiency cannot measure. Carefully choosing oddly shaped produce suggests a wish to trust things that are clumsy but honest. This is our speculation, but hesitating to wash muddy vegetables may mirror reluctance to face a troublesome problem or relationship that takes effort. Chopping vegetables and cooking alongside someone hints at a longing for a partner who will share the patient, unglamorous work.

What to do on waking

Add one seasonal vegetable to today's meals. If heaviness or fatigue persists, eat well and see a doctor if symptoms concern you.
