Psychology
Rope can bind or connect, so it reflects whether your ties support you or hold you back. Gripping a rope firmly suggests you can ask for and accept help; rope wrapped around your body may show feeling trapped by duty or relationships.
Folklore and history
Shrine shimenawa ropes mark the boundary of sacred space. The Jomon period is named for pottery patterns made by rolling cord across clay. Some regions held tug-of-war contests to divine the year's harvest or catch. Rope has long bound people to gods and to each other.

This site's view
In this site's view, it matters which end you held. A rope thrown to you means noticing a hand reaching out; one you threw hints at the weariness of always supporting others. A frayed rope suggests a thinning bond that has not yet snapped.
Going deeper: our reading
Rope gains strength that no single fibre has by twisting many thin strands together. In old rural life, straw and hemp rope were often made at home, and twisting rope on winter evenings was a common sight. That slow, patient work by hand is accumulated time and persistence. In this site's reading, people who dream of rope are often in the middle of trying to bind scattered things into one. Twisting rope in a dream suggests a will to gather friends, family or your own thoughts into a single strength. This is our speculation, but rope unravelling back into loose fibres mirrors worry that a relationship or plan you worked hard to hold together is splitting along separate interests. If you were skipping rope or playing tug-of-war with others, your heart may be longing to remember the joy of moving in time with someone.
What to do on waking
Write down one "I must" that binds you and ask whether it is truly necessary. Some knots come loose more easily than expected.
