Day and night in balance: steady your heart and thank your ancestors.

Psychology
An equinox or Higan dream can reflect a wish to rebalance, or awareness of ties to ancestors and the departed. A day when light and dark are equal symbolises reviewing imbalances, between work and rest or company and solitude. Visiting a grave shows a wish to confirm your roots.
Folklore and history
The week around the spring equinox is Higan, when families visit graves to honour ancestors. Because the sun sets due west, it has been a day to think of the Pure Land believed to lie in the west. Many offer sweet rice cakes, and a saying holds that heat and cold last only until Higan. The dream urges inner harmony and gratitude to ancestors.

This site's view
In this site's view, the direction of the sunset matters. Gazing straight at it means you have gently accepted a farewell; walking with it at your back means you are ready to close the past and move on. Being unable to speak at a grave may mean unspoken gratitude remains in your heart.
Going deeper: our reading
The equinox week of Higan comes twice a year in Japan, and around the autumn one, red spider lilies bloom along paddy ridges and riverbanks. Flowering at almost the same time each year, they have long told people that a seasonal turning point had arrived, no calendar needed. Someone dreaming of Higan may sense such a turning point despite busy days. In this site's reading, who you visited the grave with matters. Cleaning a family grave together suggests reconsidering your role within the family. Praying quietly alone points to thoughts you want to confide only to the departed. Relatives you rarely see may reflect a wish to renew loosened ties. This is our speculation, but a spring Higan dream may lean toward what lies ahead, an autumn one toward what has passed. Either way, time spent remembering the dead helps restore inner balance.
