Psychology

A Great Cold dream reflects feeling that now is the hardest stretch, along with the will to endure it. Freezing can mirror coldness in relationships or loneliness. Whether you shivered or endured shows how much reserve you have left.

Folklore and history

Daikan, around January 20 until the start of spring, is the last of the 24 seasonal divisions and the coldest time. Miso and sake were traditionally brewed in this cold, and martial artists trained in winter practice. Hardship itself was seen as time that matures good things.

Exploring a haunted spot on foot often means covering long distances, so staying hydrated matters. A one-touch vacuum-insulated steel bottle opens with one hand while the other holds a flashlight or camera, and it keeps drinks cold or hot year-round.

This site's view

In this site's view, look at what was frozen. A frozen pond or road may be a stalled plan quietly maturing like winter-brewed miso. Frozen hands or feet mean your body is reaching its limit before your mind. Spring comes to those who rest, not only to those who endure.

Going deeper: our reading

The coldest stretch of the year, which includes the Great Cold, is also when Japanese people send midwinter greeting cards, asking after the health of those they missed at New Year or who are in mourning. In the harshest weather, people have long thought of someone far away. In this site's reading, a Great Cold dream may show you noticing others in the same chill through the hardship you yourself are enduring. Lending someone gloves or a scarf suggests you still have the strength to be kind in a hard time. Being handed a warm drink means you are ready to accept help. This is our speculation, but wandering a freezing town looking for an acquaintance may reveal a sudden concern for someone you have not contacted lately. Folklore even prizes eggs laid on this day, as if things born in hardship carry special strength. Cold can draw people closer.

What to do on waking

Keep your neck, wrists, and ankles warm today. When the body is cold, the heart tends to shrink too.
