Psychology
Lightning reflects the flash when an answer suddenly appears amid confusion. If the light struck you more than the sound, the dream leans toward insight rather than shock. A scene lit for an instant can precede noticing an overlooked fact.
Folklore and history
The word inazuma is said to come from 'rice spouse': lightning common at ripening time was thought to make rice fruitful. Some say the zigzag paper strips on shrine ropes represent lightning. It meant both fear and a bountiful harvest.

This site's view
In this site's view, meaning lies in what was visible only for an instant. Recall what the flash revealed. A face means your intuition already knows something about that person; an empty field means untouched potential waiting for its harvest.
Going deeper: our reading
Have you ever counted the seconds between a flash and its thunder to judge how far away the storm was? Light arrives instantly; sound follows. In this site's reading, people who dream of lightning are often caught between a flash of insight and the delay before it affects reality: an idea not yet shared, or news whose meaning has not sunk in. Watching lightning from indoors suggests calmly observing change from a safe place; running outside in alarm, a mind that has not caught up with a sudden event; lightning striking a nearby tree, a sense of abrupt change for someone or somewhere close; rain starting after the flash, tension breaking and feelings spilling out. This is our speculation, but finding the lightning beautiful may mean you are getting ready to accept sudden change.
