Psychology
Cracking ground mirrors fear that your foundations, work, family or values, are shaking. Losing footing ties to fear of losing your place. Jumping the gap or nearly falling shows how you cope with change.
Folklore and history
Japanese lore blamed earthquakes on a giant catfish underground, held down by the kaname-ishi stone at Kashima Shrine in Ibaraki. After a great Edo-period quake, catfish prints called namazu-e circulated widely. Real quake victims deserve deep respect.

This site's view
In this site's view, what mattered is what you saw across the crack. Splitting earth reveals what lay beneath. Pitch dark means a problem you are not ready to face; a person on the far side means a rift you long to bridge.
Going deeper: our reading
Have you ever seen a dandelion or small weed sprouting from a crack in the asphalt? A crack marks breakage, yet also a place where new life takes root. Japan also has kintsugi, mending broken pottery with lacquer and decorating the seams with gold, keeping cracks as part of a vessel's history rather than hiding them. In this site's reading, people who dream of the ground cracking are often searching, after a shaken foundation, for how to live with that wound. Plants growing from the crack suggest a new self beginning to grow from upheaval; filling the crack with someone, the reassurance of a partner in repair; watching a small crack slowly widen, early awareness of an anxiety not yet surfaced. This is our speculation, but the dream may teach that accepting yourself, cracks included, steadies the ground.
What to do on waking
Write down one thing in your life you feel is unshakable. Checking emergency supplies and securing furniture turns the dream into real reassurance.
