Psychology
A Setsubun dream can reflect a wish to cut off bad luck or drive out inner fears. Throwing beans at the demon shows growing strength to face problems; fleeing it means you still avoid what you must confront. The demon may also be your own anger or craving.
Folklore and history
Setsubun means the dividing of seasons, especially the eve of the start of spring. A court rite to expel demons of disease and disaster is counted among the roots of bean-throwing, and holly sprigs with sardine heads guard doorways. Driving out the demon is read as shedding bad luck.
On long investigations or drives between locations, a dead phone or flashlight battery can end the trip early. A spare power source is worth carrying.

This site's view
In this site's view, notice the demon's face as it left. If it fled in frustration, what troubled you is losing power. If it looked lonely, it may not be an enemy but a feeling you cast away. Inviting the demon inside may show a wish to make peace with your weakness.
Going deeper: our reading
In the Setsubun bean-throwing custom, an adult in the family often puts on a demon mask and lets the children pelt them with beans, running away in exaggerated fright. In this site's reading, if you were on the demon's side in a Setsubun dream, it is not a dream of being wicked. It shows you taking on the unpopular role for someone else's sake: the one who scolds, objects or keeps order. Whether the beans hurt or you could laugh tells you how tired that role has made you. Because people eat one bean for each year of their age, counting beans in a dream may reflect thoughts about growing older. This is our speculation, but if the dream ended with someone running to you after the mask came off, the role you played has been truly appreciated.
