What Is Said About It

This is the site of a pet-related facility said to have stood in Kumagaya City, Saitama, now spoken of as a ruin. The name “Africa Kennel” is remembered through its link to the “dog lovers serial murder case” that came to light in Saitama in the 1990s, and that association is what carried it into haunted-spot lore.

In 2021, KARASU CHANNEL carried out on-site reporting here. The decayed building, and a moment during a solo investigation when an unexplained sound was heard, can be seen in the related video at the end of this article. It is a video that includes staging and we do not guarantee its content; we introduce it as a record conveying the desolate atmosphere of the site.

What the Record and History Tell Us

The “dog lovers serial murder case” was a real case in Saitama Prefecture and was widely reported at the time. It occurred in 1993, and an arrest was made in January 1995. A separate case in Osaka Prefecture shares the name, but the two are said to be unrelated.

We do not go into the details of the case or the names of those involved. What we record here is how the memory of a case attaches itself to one place and turns into a rumor of a “frightening spot.”

That said, we have not been able to confirm through primary sources whether the present ruin is the facility from the time of the case, and specific accounts of paranormal experiences are few. At the core of the rumor is less a ghost story than the memory of the case itself.

Our Reflections — When the Memory of a Case Is Replaced by a Ghost Story

As time passes, places said to be the scenes of real cases tend to be cut off from the facts, leaving only the impression of a “scary place.” In our view this is structural to rumor: the heavier the fact, the more people try to replace it with an easy story such as a “ghost” instead of facing it directly.

This replacement looks, at first glance, like a way of keeping distance from the case. In practice it carries the danger of quietly pushing the victims into the background of entertainment. This is our inference, but when the eeriness of a ruin joins the memory of a case, rumor easily leans toward “consuming” the tragedy. We record the desolate state of the place while remaining aware of that lean.

One more inference of ours: part of why this place is retold may be the shock that something so grave was hidden inside everyday life. The gap between an ordinary business of breeding and selling and the memory of the case stirs the imagination strongly. It is not frightening because a ghost appears, but because one has learned what lay behind something that looked ordinary. We suspect the root of the rumor’s fear lies there.

Whether the present ruin and the facility of the case are really the same place also cannot be firmly corroborated. Speaking of the unconfirmed as fact is not honest to those concerned or to readers. Saying plainly what we do not know is part of the work of keeping a record.

Lastly, we ask readers to remember that bereaved families and others concerned may still live with the memory of this case. Visiting the place could mean intruding, uninvited, on their time.

Kumagaya sits on the middle reaches of the Arakawa River and prospered as a post town on the Nakasendo road. In 2018 it recorded 41.1 degrees Celsius, a Japanese record at the time, and became known as a “hot city.” Each July the Kumagaya Uchiwa Festival, sometimes called the greatest gion festival in the Kanto region, takes place. Memory of past events remains quietly within the calm of everyday town life, and we want to record it with respect for the daily life of the land.

A Nearby Recommendation — Kumagaya Sakura Tsutsumi

Kumagaya Sakura Tsutsumi, along the Arakawa River, is one of “Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots,” with Somei-Yoshino trees in bloom over about two kilometers. In spring it bustles with visitors, and in the adjacent Arakawa Greenway citizens enjoy walking and sports. After a heavy subject, a calm place like this is a good way to settle the mind.

Reporting Notes

It may be private land, and entering without permission is not recommended. The current condition and exact location need to be confirmed on site, and the position on the map is an approximate coordinate. We carried out on-site reporting (filming), but out of consideration for the real case behind it, we refrain from detailed description of the facility and its surroundings.

If you are feeling distressed, or a heavy subject has weighed on you, please do not carry it alone. In Japan you can contact the Yorisoi Hotline (0120-279-338, 24 hours, Japanese language), or another support service.
