The “former Nogi Hospital” is a ruin quietly remaining in Nogi Town, Shimotsuga District, in the south of Tochigi Prefecture. It is often said to have once been used as a psychiatric hospital, but no record backing when it was built, or when and for what purpose it was used, was found in this investigation. Although several paranormal sites introduce it as a “former psychiatric hospital,” it should be noted that no grounds for that are shown.

Where the Label “Psychiatric Hospital” Comes From

Among ruin enthusiasts and occult-related sites, there is a tendency for the explanation “it was a psychiatric hospital” to be added after the fact whenever an old hospital site or a large facility site is found. For the former Nogi Hospital too, it may have come to be called that by association, from the desolation of its exterior and interior, and no primary record showing its opening or closure as a psychiatric hospital has been confirmed. In this article we state clearly both the fact that “it is said so” and the fact that “no backing has been obtained.”

The Content of the Sighting Accounts

What is told as rumor includes an account of a group in white robes engaged in ritual-like behavior, sighting reports of the ghosts of a woman and a boy, and a strange voice said to be heard from the basement. The existence of a basement itself is unconfirmed, and most of the information remains hearsay.

The unscented version of the classic lubricant and rust-preventive spray "5-56." Spray it on a rusted hinge, lock, shutter, or gate in a ruin before opening it, and it moves more smoothly with less loud creaking or sticking.

Access & Location

It lies on grounds thought to be private land within Nogi Town, and the exact location is withheld in this article. The surroundings are an area of houses and farmland, and entering the grounds without permission constitutes trespassing.

Please note that the position on the map is an approximate coordinate based on public information and may differ from the exact spot.

Current Condition

It appears to have been left in place and to be deteriorating with age. A deteriorated ruin carries great physical dangers such as floors giving way and ceilings collapsing, and even before any paranormal phenomenon, the risk as a building is high.

Analysis — The Fear That the Label “Hospital” Calls Forth

There are not a few haunted spots where only the label “former hospital” has taken on a life of its own while the reality remains unclear. The image a hospital originally carries, “a place where life and death intersect,” probably links easily with the eeriness of a ruin. While avoiding spreading poorly backed rumors as if they were fact, we believe that treating the question of why that image took hold as itself an object of analysis is the honest way for this site to approach it.

Nearby Spot — Nogi Town Brick Kiln

A short detour from the former Nogi Hospital brings you to the “Nogi Town Brick Kiln,” built in the Meiji era. It is a Hoffmann kiln designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan, distinguished by a unique exterior like a pointed cap. Inside the hall there are exhibits where you can learn about the manufacturing process, and it is loved as a valuable piece of industrial heritage conveying the history of the brick industry that supported modernization.

Cautions

Entering private land without permission is highly likely to constitute trespassing, so please never do it. Because of the building’s deterioration, care is needed against falling debris and the like even when just looking from outside.
